Social activists and elected representatives on Wednesday vowed to protect Goa for posterity, saying the State will be saved only if the people save their waddos and villages from the destructive mega projects.

At a meeting held at Chinchinim on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, speakers said the Regional Plan should be put in place after taking the sentiments of the people and the future requirements of the State.

Addressing the gathering, Aam Aadmi Party's Velim MLA Cruz Silva said the same old question keeps repeating as to who will save Goa for future generations. “According to me, people in the villages will have to protect their respective villages and in turn, they will save Goa,” the MLA said.

He added: “I am happy that activists and citizens from across the State have come to Chinchinim to take part in the initiative to save Goa. If they carry this message of saving Goa to their respective villages, we will be able to protect our state.”

Saying that mega projects are coming up not just in one or two villages, the Velim MLA said, “We come across mega projects coming up across the State. It is not just in Reis Magos or at Sancoale. Hence, people in the villages should remain alert to foil the plans of turning their villages into concrete jungles.”

Speakers demanded that the new Regional Plan be put in place after taking the people into confidence.
