Sanika Pawar, a Std 8 student of Sarvodaya High School, Curchorem, bagged the first prize for her poem ‘Paanjaryantle Shevne' (Caged Bird), while Devita Khule, a Std 10 of Canacona-based Mallikarjun High School, won the second prize for her poem ‘Bharatiya Sainik' (Indian Soldier), which speaks about the zeal of the soldier to fight for the nation.
The third prize was shared by two Goan girls, Paliya Agni of Std 6 at Margao-based Ravindra Kelekar Dnyanmandir and Anisha Naik of Std 10 at the Aldona-based Mae de Deus High School for their poems, ‘Pavs' (Rain) and ‘Hanv Zaad, Mhaka Samjaat' (I am tree, understand me) respectively.
Sanika's first prize winning poem speaks about the children playing in the courtyard without wings and the bird who could not fly though it has wings, as it is caged. It also tells about the child's inability to free the bird as the child could not reach the cage.
Devita's poem on Indian solider narrates the sacrifices the soldiers have to make, which are not important in front of the nation. Palia's poem questions the rain which showers when its time to go to school and in Anisha's poem, the plant in its personified form requests the humans to save it from being chopped.
The prize distribution ceremony will be held at Mangalore on January 14, 2018, at the "Kavita Fest" annually organised by Kavita Trust, Mangalore. Noted Kannada Novelist K T Gatti will be the chief guest.
