Last week WRD Minister Subhash Shirodkar stated the Goa water reservoirs are at 40 per cent capacity, assuring 150 days of supply and asking citizens to use water responsibly. It’s common knowledge going back in time, Goa had ample water much way beyond these 150 days assurance; which means that Goa’s water resources have significantly deteriorated over the last few years. On one hand, the government is asking citizens to manage water properly and on the other hand, the government is blindly allowing so much of unsustainable real estate development, without any proper study of the state's carrying capacity. There are so many instances of Govt looking the other ways as mega real estate developers destroy lakes/waterbodies, hills (water reservoirs), aquifers. The government's high level of corruption and poor governance itself is robbing Goa of thousands of gallons of water. Then you have the Mhadei issue where Goa ministers seem to be working behind the scenes, to have Karnataka divert the waters away from Goa. Why is the tiger reserve not yet notified, which would have mostly likely sealed the Mhadei issue in Goa’s favour ?
