Are payment gateway companies required?

When we book train tickets through IRCTC or pay for domestic gas cylinders through Indian Oil One app and bills towards piped natural gas etc., we may use credit/debit cards or internet banking. The acknowledgement receipt would reflect the actual billed amount while the debited amounted is a little more, say Rs 5. This is because, just prior to making the payment a gateway pops up to facilitate the transaction. Why is there need for a third-party who charges extra when we are making the payments from our bank accounts or cards? Imagine the number of internet transactions that happen on a daily basis and the money raked in by the intermediary party who operate the payment gateways. Why should this gateways electronically ‘take’ our money and ‘hand’ it to the vendors/ service provider? There is no benefit or advantage either to the payer or to the payee. The government should do away with this ‘middle-man’ businesses that are unnecessarily wedging themselves between two parties. These third-parties have no right to meddle by acting as conduits between us and the service providers during any transactions.
