Footpaths are constructed of tiles, stones and pavers of various shapes and sizes. All these are fixed by means of sand and cement and these construction materials absorb sunlight that results in an increase in heat radiation to the surroundings.
Moreover, there are no conduits for the rainwater to percolate. Perhaps it would be ideal to have individual gratings (either of cement or iron) at every 100-150 m, along one side of the footpath.
And along the side of the kerb, plants could be planted and protected with wire mesh. The soil would permit the water to permeate and recharge the groundwater.
The above could be a part of the proposed ‘green lungs,’ in urban areas, by the Minister for Urban Development with the help of the forest department.
As per the minister, this green mission would help to improve the quality of air, address climate change, support biodiversity and provide shelter to the citizens.
