Drinking water imbroglio at Anjuna

Anjuna is one of the tourist hubs in Goa but it is in the news for the wrong reason. The records stated that monsoon rain was excess this year in Goa yet there is drinking water crisis at Anjuna. As reported water crisis went on for several months and the citizens were put in great inconvenience even during the recent festivities. Drinking water is one of the necessities of life.

As per the records available on public domain, since August 2019, Government of India in partnership with States has implemented Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) – Har Ghar Jal that is to supply water to every rural household by 2024. Certainly, the water is state subject therefore the implementation of this scheme depends on the states and Union Territories. It is also clearly stated that GOI will help the states with technical and financial assistance.

Now as reported widely, on July 26, 2023, six states viz. Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Telangana besides other union territories reported to have provided tap water connection to every rural household in their states. As per this report card there should not be any drinking water crisis in rural households in Goa but citizens of Anjuna seem to face the brunt of negligence of the authorities or lackadaisical attitude of the concerned persons that too for several months now. It is disheartening to see the citizens of Anjuna have come to out to fight for their right to drinking water.
