Govt must pursue Blue Flag certification of Goa beaches

The call by Shailesh Nayak for the Goa government to pursue Blue Flag certification of its beaches highlights a significant opportunity to enhance the state’s global appeal as a sustainable tourism destination. Despite Goa's reputation for pristine sandy shores, currently none of its beaches have the prestigious Blue Flag certification. This recognition, awarded by the Foundation for Environmental Education, requires meeting 33 strict criteria across water quality, environmental management, safety, and education. India is already home to 12 Blue Flag-certified beaches, but Goa's absence from this list is surprising given its prominent status as a beach tourism hub. To address this, the government must identify specific beaches, implement necessary measures, and submit proposals for evaluation. Achieving Blue Flag certification would not only improve environmental sustainability but also elevate Goa’s profile in eco-tourism, attracting environmentally conscious travellers and fostering local awareness about beach conservation.
