Plastic waste treatment plants urgently needed

As per the news report,  "Goa drowns in sea of plastic, waste unit nowhere" (TGE, December 10), a whopping 29,000 tonnes of plastic waste is generated in Goa annually, which is one among 9 states that have failed to set up plastic waste management plants in the country. A very disparaging scenario that points to the failure of the Goa government to tackle the menace of unattended waste plastic in dumps of plastic bags, bottles, caps, etc that is is detrimental to the environment, human and marine life when disposed off in water bodies or buried in the ground. It is time that we in Goa abide by the Swachh Bharat phase II rules for cleanliness of villages, by  making village panchayats responsible for efficient handling of plastic waste. The Goa government on its part needs to start constructing a few plastic waste treatment plants without further delay.
