Goa’s job market needs local talent

The Goa government has made it compulsory to advertise job vacancies in local newspapers. This aims to create more job opportunities for Goans. Many private companies operating in industrial estates like Verna, Sancoale, Kundaim, Khorlim, Tivim, and Pilerne hire workers from other states, as finding skilled local workers is a challenge. Companies prefer hiring trained staff to avoid spending on training.

Industries need skilled and semi-skilled workers. Many workers from Karwar, Belagavi, and Maharashtra take up jobs in Goa after receiving training for a year or two in their home states. Most job opportunities in Goa are in industrial estates, especially in the pharmaceutical sector, where workers are needed for packaging, quality control, and other roles. Workers from neighbouring states are often willing to take up any job, learn new skills, and move on to better positions with experience.

To address this, the Goa government, in collaboration with private companies, has started training programmes. Trainees receive a stipend of Rs 15,000 to Rs 20,000, and after completing training, they are placed in jobs. Every year, thousands of university graduates look for work, and they should be encouraged to apply for training programmes.

The government has also made experience certificates compulsory for state government jobs, along with merit-based selection. This highlights the need to train young people and equip them with skills before they enter the workforce.
