The recent temporary repairs (filling potholes with rubble) on the badly damaged roads in Arrarim Ward, Saligao, and towards the Saligao Seminary/Pilerne industry were initiated by the Saligao Panchayat and PWD a few days ago, seemingly in response to local protests. However, progress on these repairs appears to be moving very slowly. Local leaders have been heard justifying the delays, blaming the ongoing monsoon season. It begs the question: why did they allow the roads to be hastily vandalised by PWD workers back in March-April-May, knowing well that the Boa Viagem reservoir construction would take months to complete?
Residents have been advised to endure the inconvenience a while longer, with claims that a new water pipeline laid alongside these damaged roads will resolve Saligao’s water issues, including for the Calangute-Candolim coastal area. This initiative is portrayed as a significant favour to the community, despite doubts lingering about its true intentions. Whether this pipeline genuinely addresses Saligao’s water problems, as asserted by local leaders and the MLA, or if it serves other interests such as upcoming mega-projects or aiding outsiders, remains to be seen.
