The rogue cop PI Sunil Gudlar, arrested by the Anti-Corruption Cell of Goa Police, can now be termed a habitual offender. The Goa CM Pramod Sawant’s casual statement that he is “suspended” is not enough. He needs to be dismissed from service, and the Home Minister of Goa should recommend that the DGP start the procedure to sack him. Earlier, when the rogue cop was arrested in a drugs nexus, he was let off due to a shabby investigation. Goa Police Crime Branch played games to destroy evidence before handing the case to the CBI, which acted as a mere spectator. The Court had passed strictures against the CBI for its casual approach. It has become a trend in Goa that high-profile cases involving public servants are first probed by Goa Police, and only after destroying evidence, handed to the CBI. Politicians and Goa Police higher-ups waited like vultures for Gudlar’s acquittal. He was reinstated, promoted and given a lucrative posting before being caught red-handed in a bribe case. He remains profitable to his political and police masters. A recent complaint by a beef trader shows he resumed old tactics. Goa’s rotten system keeps protecting him. The DGP should start proper dismissal proceedings immediately. Retired honest cops must pressurise the DGP to protect Goa Police’s image.
