In a tragic incident a three-year-old child from Mumbai reportedly drowned in a swimming pool at a guest house situated at Grande Morod, Saligao on Wednesday. It is learnt that the child, part of a family from Maharashtra on vacation, was walking with his father near the pool when the tragedy occurred. According to the police the father was distracted by a call on his mobile phone during which time the curious toddler wandered too close to the pool and slipped into the water. The child was declared brought dead when rushed to the Primary Health Centre at Candolim. This raises some pertinent questions.  Has the device become an obsession? One complains of vehicular drivers talking on the mobile while driving. Of course most car accidents occur due to texting, calling, or just checking the phone while behind the wheel. However, what about pedestrians crossing the road while busy on the mobile, at times with a child in tow. Has the mobile become more precious than life itself? Today’s mobile phone has many features besides talking or sending messages. The disturbing part is that people are unwilling to recognize the dangers associated with using the mobile irresponsibly.
