Mob holds family to ransom

ARWIN MESQUITA, Colva | JANUARY 13, 2025, 12:04 AM IST

Recently, a family in Copelvaddo, Sernabatim faced verbal abuse, threats to life, and harassment allegedly from two Panchas for two days. At one point, they reportedly returned with a group of over 25 people to intimidate the family, including a 91-year-old woman.

Despite repeated calls to the Colva Police, no immediate action was taken to address this emergency, raising serious concerns about law enforcement’s effectiveness and the Panchas' apparent lack of fear.

The family filed a two-page complaint, detailing the harassment. However, even 24 hours after the 91-year-old victim lodged her complaint regarding the mob attack and life threats, an FIR had not been registered.

This incident highlights growing concerns in Goa about Panchas allegedly involved in illegal activities and their hostility toward citizens who challenge such violations.

Authorities, including the Home and Panchayat Minister and DGP, must urgently investigate these allegations and ensure accountability. The lack of action in such cases undermines public trust in the system and poses a threat to civil society.
