Opinion Poll Day: No official event shows govt apathy

JERRY FERNANDES, Saligao | JANUARY 19, 2025, 01:17 AM IST

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant had clearly assured the Leader of Opposition, Yuri Alemao, on the floor of the House last year of officially celebrating the Opinion Poll Day on a very large scale with a State function starting from 2025 itself.

Unfortunately, nothing of that sort was officially organised anywhere in the State by the Pramod Sawant government on this year's Opinion Poll Day too, i.e., January 16, 2025, despite all the assurances given on the floor of the House to the opposition members. Why?

When the Sawant government can annually spend huge sums of money in organising a number of official functions and celebrating the birth and death anniversaries of some neighbouring medieval kings/rulers in the State throughout the year, then why can't it organise one single official function on January 16 to mark or remember the historic Opinion Poll Day in Goa? Doesn't it know that if Goans had not voted against the merger with Maharashtra on January 16, 1967, then Goa would have become another district of Maharashtra?

The State government has clearly shown how much it really cares for even those who have fought and contributed to retaining Goa's unique identity by failing to keep up with its own commitment to celebrate the Opinion Poll Day as "Asmitai Dis". Atam Goenkarani kharench bhivpachi garaz asa.
