Remembering Dr Jack de Sequeira’s contribution

Dr Jack de Sequeira, hailed as the Father of Goa’s Opinion Poll, played a pivotal role in preserving Goa’s unique identity. During Chief Minister Dayanand Bandodkar’s tenure, plans to merge Goa into Maharashtra were thwarted by Dr Sequeira’s dynamic leadership of the United Goans Party (UGP). His relentless lobbying, including delegations to central leaders and the AICC, led to the historic decision of a referendum in 1967. This was a monumental moment for Goa, marking its path as an independent state. South Goa voters were decisive in rejecting the merger.

Dr Sequeira’s steadfast vision ensured Goa retained its distinct culture, language, and autonomy. Though he never sought glory, his contributions remain etched in the hearts of Goans. Tragically, his unparalleled legacy has not been officially honoured; no statue stands in the Assembly complex, and his role is yet to be included in the school syllabus. Despite this neglect, his admirers celebrate his legacy through awards, essay contests, and private initiatives. Dr Sequeira’s humility, dedication, and vision continue to inspire, symbolising the resilience and pride of Goa as a unique state in the Indian Union.
