Stray cattle on roads are cause of serious accidents

GREGORY E DSOUZA, Siolim | SEPTEMBER 15, 2024, 08:17 PM IST

Road accidents are increasing due to bad road engineering, poor quality of material used in asphalting and reckless driving. There is an urgent need to see that speed cameras are installed on every road in Goa. This should this government's priority if it really believes in saving lives. On an average we have at least one death everyday on Goa roads that's bad for family, society and economics of our state. The stray cattle are another cause of concern and the Govt under CM Pramod Sawant gives directions that those stray cattle who are impounded, their owners will be barred from availing any loans. If only he had checked with the local bodies and NGOs, it is the large  local breed cows that are straying on the roads and everywhere for want of grazing land and no more cowsheds as the owners have converted their cow shelters into homes. These owners have left their cattle to search for food from garbage dumps. These cattle should be tagged and sent to gaushalas for rehabilitation. I hope the panchayats and Animal Husbandry Dept will act to eradicate stray cattle from Goan roads as the tourist season is fast approaching.
