What needs to be done to stop drinking in public?

A local news channel reported that Mapusa Police rounded up a few youngsters on Tuesday afternoon for openly consuming alcohol near the ITI training school. Alcohol is ruining many Goan families, and its easy availability every few metres encourages even students to develop an addiction. Despite knowing this, the government continues to issue licenses for wholesale liquor outlets, mainly to attract domestic tourists.

If authorities truly want to curb public drinking and protect Goa’s image, they must reduce liquor outlets, especially near schools and religious places. Hefty fines should be imposed on tourists drinking in public or driving under the influence, rather than selectively targeting local students found sitting with friends in isolated spots.
