The Goa Waste Management Corporation (GWMC) has written to the State government stating that the capacity of the Garbage Treatment Plant (GTP) at Saligao is 100 tonnes per day, which can be extended to a maximum of 125 tonnes.

The GMWC has, however, requested the government to restrict the despatch of segregated garbage to 125 tonnes per day for the proper functioning of the plant.

This was disclosed by the Saligao GTP Processing Director Ganesh Kandaswami to a delegation of Saligao panchayat, which visited the plant regarding complaints from residents regarding foul smell at the plant.

During the visit, the delegation observed a dump outside the plant, while workers were struggling to separate the recyclable material from the garbage received from the panchayats.

Kandaswami explained that the dump outside the plant area belonged to the Candolim panchayat.

“We had informed panchayats in North Goa to send the Saigao GTP segregated garbage, but only 6 of the 30 panchayats send garbage in segregated form. The major garbage is received from Candolim and Calangute and that too, in unsegregated form,” said Kundaswami.

Kundaswami admitted that some foul odour had been emanating from the GTP and informed the delegation that they are investigating the matter.

Regarding power generated at the GTP, Kundaswami said, “The plant generates around 6-7 KWH of power daily and till date, we have imported 12198.5 KWH power during the current month and have exported 46100 KWH power to the national grid during the same period.”
