All eyes on BJP’s introspection over South Goa poll debacle

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | JUNE 16, 2024, 12:50 AM IST

Moments before Pallavibai Dempo filed her nomination papers on April 16, Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant took pride in BJP’s strength in South Goa, what with six of his Cabinet Ministers, besides three Congress turncoats, hailing from down South. A confident Pramodbab even thundered that Industries Minister Mauvinbab Godinho will give 5,000 vote lead for Pallavibai in Dabolim, while also pinning hopes on Diggu to keep the party flying high in Margao. Post-June 4 LS results, questions are doing the rounds in political circles whether the party has done introspection over the poll debacle, to find out the achievers and those who led down the party. Wait and watch.

Vijai tagged as de facto Oppn leader questioned in Cong camp

Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai must have received a host of wishes as he celebrated his birthday on Friday. But, a congratulatory message from a Congress general secretary seemed to have stirred a hornet’s nest in the Congress camp, but for a different reason. For, the Congress leader is believed to have described Vijaibab as a de facto Opposition leader for taking up issues plaguing the State. Sources said the congratulatory message did not go down well with the Congress party leadership. It’s not yet clear whether the message from the Congress general secretary has reached the national capital. Wait and watch.

Uncertainty surrounds Kamat’s Cabinet prospects post-LS polls

Many an ardent supporter of Congress-turned-BJP Diggu must have hoped that the seven-time Margao MLA would find a berth in the Pramodbab Sawant Cabinet post-Lok Sabha polls. The LS results from Margao in particular and Saxtti in general has now left many a worker to keep their fingers crossed, whether the BJP leadership will induct their Baba into the Ministry. For, the BJP could not garner the anticipated 5,000-plus vote lead in Diggu’s fiefdom. Many a question still remains unanswered post-June 4 election results.

Police and civil servants await transfer orders post-LS polls

The Lok Sabh election is over and so is the Election Code of Conduct lifted by the election authorities. Police and the civil servants seemed keeping their fingers crossed -- whether they will return back to their pavilion or get a better posting. In fact, many a police officer as well as junior and senior grade officers are believed to have already packed their bags, waiting for a general transfer order from the government any time. Will the police and civil servants return back to their previous posting? The ambitious amongst the lot seemed looking forward for prized postings. Wait and watch.

Did GPCC chief attempt to get Cong rebel to withdraw from ZP by-poll?

What exactly was GPCC chief Amitbab Patkar’s mission when he reportedly called on Congress rebel Roylabai in a last ditch attempt to get her to withdraw her nomination for the Benaulim by-poll? Well, Amitbab must have obviously met Roylabai with a plea to back out of the ZP by-poll fray. Roylabai, however, remains in the race as an independent candidate. The Congress seemed to have gone on an assessment mode on the fall out of Roylabai’s candidature on the INDI Alliance-backed AAP candidate, more so after she had finished runners up in the 2020 Zilla Panchayat poll. Wait and watch.
