CM’s religious conversion stance at ST event raises questions

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | NOVEMBER 17, 2024, 12:06 AM IST

It was a week when Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant faced questions on the social media after he raised the bogey of religious conversions from the platform of legendary tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s programme. Questions were indeed raised what made the CM to raise the contentious issue at the ST event; whether the government has come across conversions in the State’s ST belt in the last 60 years et al. Will the issue of religious conversions have any takers when land conversions and jobs-for-cash scam is the flavour of the season? Many a question indeed remains unanswered.

ST leaders at odds: Will saffron brigade find a solution to issue?

Has the saffron brigade any solution to bring a truce between party’s warring ST leaders – Speaker Rameshbab Tawadkar and Minister Govindbab Gaude? Sources say the saffron brigade has taken serious note of the ongoing game of one-upmanship amongst the ST leaders, more so after the Speaker threatened to quit the post. Sources say Legendary tribal leader Bhagwan Birsa Munda’s programme had offered a platform to the government to bring the warring ST factions under one banner, but in vain. Wait and watch as Speaker Rameshbab Tawadkar inaugurated the Bhagwan Birsa Munda Tribal Pride Yatra from Patradevi memorial, which will culminate in his home constituency Canacona.

As the stage is finally set for the inauguration of the beautified Dambab Circle named after the city’s presiding deity, Lord Damodar near Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai must be hoping that the Dambab Circle project will help him maintain a balance, with his traditional minority voters and the voters amongst the majority community. Accused by opponents over the years for minority appeasement, the Goa Forward supremo may certainly hope the Dambab Circle will help keep him in good stead with the Hindu voters as well. Wait and watch.

Wait and watch.

DGP’s visit to South Goa HQ comes under citizens’ scanner

DGP Alok Kumar’s visit to the South Goa district police headquarters came under public scanner, for a host of reasons. While leaving the district police headquarters, the DGP termed his visit a routine one. District police chief, SP Sunitabai Sawant, on the other hand, told the media that the DGP took a review of the jobs-for-cash scam cases, with most of these cases registered in South Goa. If sources are to be believed, the DGP had also called on Congress-turned-BJP Margao MLA Diggu at his Malbhat office before making his presence felt at the district police headquarters. Any questions?
