Cong hopes to build on LS success for Assembly polls

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | JUNE 30, 2024, 12:35 AM IST

What’s next on the agenda of Congress President Amitbab Patkar and Opposition leader Yuribab Alemao post-June 4 Lok Sabha poll results? Well, the Congress managed to retain the South Goa seat owing to a combination of factors, including the prime factor that thousands of voters came out on their own on polling day to support Captain Viriatbab Fernandes. Senior Congress leaders in private say it’s time now for the party leadership to build and strengthen the party from the grassroots ahead of the 2027 Assembly polls. Wait and watch how the Amit-Yuri duo will go about the job of strengthening the party.

Vijai's Canacaona darbar signals GFP's ambitions in constituency

What's Goa Forward party Chief Vijaybab Sardesai's mission in Canacona? Well, Vijaibab was in Canacona during the weekend attending a Darbar in the constituency. Goa Forward Party leaders may say there’s nothing new in the darbar arranged at Canacona, having kick-started the exercise in Panaji a week ago. Political observers, however, wonder whether the regional party has set its eyes on Canacona. For, in the 2022 Assembly election, the Goa Forward Party had staked a claim on the Canacona seat for party leader Prashantbab Naik before the Congress put its foot down to retain the seat for party leader Janabab Bhandari. Wait and watch.

CM's invite to Digambar for Borda inspection riles Vijai

Why did Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant ignore Goa Forward Chief Vijaibab Sardesai when he visited Fatorda earlier this week to inspect the government-owned Multipurpose school complex building at Borda? Well, when the CM inspected the building, he was accompanied by Cong-turned-BJP Margao MLA Diggu, leaving Goa Forward Chief Vijaibab fuming. The Goa Forward Chief was apparently agitated after he realised that instead of inviting him for the inspection, given his status as the local MLA, the CM invited the neighbouring MLA Diggu to his fiefdom. Vijaibab’s remarks directed at the CM-Diggu duo suggest that their presence did not go down well with him. Any questions?

PI's revelations embolden others to speak out against 'outsiders'

Suspended PI Prashal Desai's bold disclosure in the Assagao demolition case seems to have emboldened many a police officer to shed light on “demanding” seniors from outside the State. In fact, local police officers in private pointed out how many outside police officers had made them foot the bill of restaurants after partying by family and well-wishers. In fact, they cited an instance of how a senior officer used to give them chits after their routine meetings, allegedly giving them the job of arranging things, including expensive booze. Time for introspection, indeed.

As BJP course-corrects, internal wrangling makes job difficult

The BJP top brass may have gone into an introspection mode post-June 4 Lok Sabha results, to find out what has gone wrong for the party in South Goa. Party top brass may have to grapple with another issue – how to keep warring leaders in various Assembly segments in South Goa together, more so after the Lok Sabha defeat. For, in the run-up to the Lok Sabha election, the BJP had gone about bringing warring leaders from almost 19 out of the 20 Assembly segments under one banner, to dish out an impression that the party is united at the grassroots. Many of these leaders now seem waiting for the leadership to honour their promises. Wait and watch.
