Trust deficit in Oppn: Can they regroup before 2027 polls?

GUILHERME ALMEIDA | FEBRUARY 08, 2025, 01:12 AM IST

The façade of unity displayed by the Opposition MLAs just a month ago seemed to have crumbled under its own weight. People of Goa saw Opposition MLAs in the House attired in black shirts, black suit, another with a black sweater and others with arm bands. Beneath lies big trust deficit amongst the Opposition MLAs. They not only suspect each other for sharing rapport with Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant, but playing the game of one-upmanship. The situation may leave Goemkars to wonder how the Opposition will go about dislodging the saffron brigade when the 2027 Assembly election will take place exactly two years from now. Any questions?

Vijai’s attempt at unity falls flat in Legislative Assembly

Goa Forward chief Vijaibab Sardesai seemed to have realised that his diplomacy from Bahrain could not bring the Opposition MLAs on one page inside the Legislative Assembly during the two-day session. Vijaibab made no bones of the fact that he spoke to AAP MLA Venzybab Viegas, besides Opposition leader Yuribab Alemao while returning from Bahrain after attending a wedding reception. Even before he could land in Goa, it was clear that the Opposition MLAs may be keen in doing business with him and the result was all there to see on Day 1 of the session. Any questions?

Delhi polls: Results will be another acid test for Oppn

Curtains have come down on the two-day session of the Goa Legislative Assembly, leaving the Opposition parties a divided house. Hold on. The Opposition is facing another testing time, this time with counting of the votes of the Delhi Assembly election scheduled on Saturday. Goa AAP leaders in private seemed keeping their fingers crossed over the Delhi election outcome with exit polls ringing in bad news, throwing up questions on the fate of the Goa Opposition unity in the event the Lotus blooms in Delhi. For, some of the INDI Alliance partners have already started accusing the Congress for acting as the BJP B team in the Delhi polls. Any takers?

Fortnight after SP’s exit, South Goa still without full-fledged dist chief

A fortnight after the unceremonious exit of Superintendent of Police Sunitabai Sawant, the government is yet to post a full-time district police chief for South Goa till date. The government was quick to post SP, ANC Tikam Singh Verma with an additional charge of SP, South. This has raised a pertinent question in police circles and outside over the delay in appointing a full-fledged South Goa district chief when there’s no dearth of police officers, both IPS and GPS. Or, is it the government is just bidding for time before an order is issued posting its blue eyed officer from the Goa Police Service as the new SP, South. Wait and watch.

Maha Kumbh: One train, two flag-off ceremonies

Guess how many trains have departed from Goa for Prayagraj for the Maha Kumbh on Thursday, is a question doing the rounds in media and political circles. For, one came across BJP leaders led by State president Damubab Naik, Social Welfare Minister Subhashbab Phal Dessai, Congress-turned-BJP MLA Diggu and Sankalpbab flagging off the train carrying pilgrims to Prayagraj from Margao railway station. Minutes later, Chief Minister Pramodbab Sawant and other BJP leaders flagged off a train for Prayagraj from the Karmali station, before realisation dawned that two functions were held to flag off the lone train. Any questions?
