Mythological floats paraded during the Vasco Shigmotsav function enthralled thousands of people in the port town on Friday evening.

The Vasco Shigmo floats, organised by Murgao Nagrik Shigmotsav Samiti (MNSS), were flagged off by MNSS President Shekhar Khadapkar and other committee members after prayers at Lord Damodar temple in Vasco.

Different mythological floats were paraded along the route from the St Andrew’s Church Square.

This year through, the Shigmotsav began early and closed by 10 pm due to the election code of conduct. A strong police force led by Vasco PI Nilesh Rane was seen deployed during the Shigmotsav parade even as many domestic and international tourists also enjoyed the Romtamel mythological floats being paraded.

Vasco police was also seen trying to persuade various participants to hasten their movements due to shortage of time, so that Vascokars could enjoy more floats before the program ended at 10 pm.

The Shigmo at Vasco saw participation of 69 participating groups, consisting of Romtamel (13), folk dance (4) and mythological floats (26), while 26 persons displayed their talent in the fancy dress competition in front of a huge stage set up opposite the Vasco Railway station.

The entire city wore a saffron look as many colourful parades enthralled thousands of people.

Speaking to reporters, MNSS President Shekar Khadapkar said it is believed that beats of drums and dhol would drive away negative energy from around the place.

“We have some beautiful mythological floats being paraded and various competitions for folk dance and fancy dress. Winning or losing is not important but the main thing is the participation in this auspicious event,” said Khadapkar.
