Goa scored an easy nine-wicket win over Manipur to begin their Ranji Trophy 2024-25 Plate Division campaign in style at the GCA Academy ground, Porvorim, on Sunday.

Goa got six points for their victory. Had they defeated Manipur by an innings or by 10 wickets, Goa would have got an extra point.

Needing just 76 runs to win in their second innings, Goa chased the required target in 11.4 overs for the loss of Manthan Kuthkar’s wicket for 18 who was clean bowled by Manipuri pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam.

Manthan and Rohan Kadam put on a 53-run partnership for the opening wicket. Rohan, who hit nine boundaries to score a quick 46 runs off 34 balls, remained unbeaten along with Krishnamurthy Siddharth who was not out on 7.

Earlier in the day, Manipur put up a brave fight to put on 353 runs in their second innings. Five of their batsmen - Rex Rajkumar (71 not out), Prafullomani Singh (63), Johnson Singh (62), Karnajit Yumnam (56) and Al Bashid Muhammed (52) - scored fifties which ensured their team’s total reached 353.

In fact, Al Bashid Muhammed and Johnson Singh put on 106-run partnership for the third wicket. At one point, Manipur were 192/6 and could have easily been bowled out for less than 250. But, a fine batting display at the end by Manipuri wicket-keeper Prafullomani Singh (63) and all-rounder Rex Rajkumar (71 not out) took their team’s total past 350.

For Goa, right-arm medium pacer Shubham Tari was once again the pick of the bowlers. Shubham bagged four wickets (4/48), while skipper Darshan Misal took three wickets. Heramb Parab captured two wickets and Mohit Redkar bagged one wicket.

Shubham was declared Man of the Match in his debut Ranji Trophy match for his splendid bowling performance. He took nine wickets (9/88) in the match.
