St Joseph HS Calangute, Janata HS Mapusa and DM's PVS Kushe HSS Assagao register wins move into quarterfinals

Damodar English Gudi Paroda and Fr Agnel Pilar had mixed luck in the Directorate of Sports and Youth Affairs Nehru Hockey U17 boys’ hockey tournament.

Yesterday at the Hockey Stadium Peddem Mapusa, Damodar English High School advanced along with Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School, while Damodar English HSS and Fr Agnel High School crashed out.

Damodar English High School defeated Fr Agnel High School, 4-1 while Fr Agnel Higher Secondary School defeated Damodar English HSS, 3-1.

Pilar High School went into the lead in the eight minute with Sanford getting one past the Gudi defense through a field goal.

Damodar English High School rallied back to equalize in the 22nd minute with a field goal from Manjunath, followed by another field goal from Aftab in the 35th minute.

Thereafter, Sarvesh struck two goals, both penalty conversion to make it 4-1 for the Gudi school and take the team to the semi-finals where they will clash with Fr Agnel HSS Pilar.

The Pilar HSS got the better of the Gudi HSS boys 3-1 with a hat trick from Udit who scored in the 29, 32 and 37 minute while the only goal for the Gudi HSS came through the stick of Ravindra in the 16th minute.

Earlier on Thursday, Damodar English Higher Secondary School Gudi Paroda stunned St. Anthony HS Monte de Guirim 2-1 to enter the last-eight stage of the tournament.

Three other teams also made it to the quarter finals with wins over their opponents.

St. Joseph HS Calangute edged Holy Cross HS Siolim 2-0, while Janata HS Mapusa conceded an early goal against Our Lady of Lourdes HS Utorda but managed to get their act together to register an 8-1 win.

DM's PVS Kushe Higher Secondary School Assagao also had an easy 9-0 win over Infant Jesus High School Colva.

In the Damodar English HSS Gudi Paroda-St. Anthony HS Monte de Guirim match Gudi scored in the 17th minute through Rohan Gupta through a field goal and increased the lead in the 33rd minute with a goal from Ravindra, a penalty corner conversion.

The Guirim school pulled one back in the 38th minute with a penalty corner conversion goal from Saras T. Thereafter, the Guirim tried hard to draw level but could not score, with Gudi school defending with aplomb.

In the other matches, St Jospeh Calangute struck in the 35th minute and 38th minute to register their win over the Siolim school. Rohan Xaxa scored both the goals for the winning school scoring his first one of a penalty stroke and the second a field goal.

The Calangute school will now meet Honda HS Honda today.

DM's PVS Kushe HSS Assagao assisted by four goals apiece by Vasant and Deepak besides a goal from Kiran, trounced Infant Jesus HS Colva team 9-0.

Vasant scored in the 10,17, 34 and 36 minute while Deepak found the target in the 21,22, 49 and 59 minute, while Kiran scored in the 24th minute.

Assagao HSS now meet Janata HS Mapusa today, which coasted to an 8-1 win over Our Lady of Lourdes HS Utorda.

The Utorda school coached by Umer Muttawali, struck in the 14th minute with a field goal from Danesh Jadhav much to the surprise of their opponent.

The Mapusa school struck five minutes later with an equalizer from Rakesh, who went on to score five more goals to score the first double hat-trick of the tournament, including two goals within a few seconds.

Aman and Krishnan scored one goal apiece for Janata HS Mapusa, with five goals coming through penalty corner conversions and three field goals.

The semi-finals will be played on September 2 and the final the following day.
