Dream Come True: Aakash Sangwan reflects on first call-up to Indian national team

Panaji:  Aakash Sangwan, a 28-year-old left-back, has experienced an exciting few months in his football career. After impressing with strong performances for Chennaiyin FC over the past two seasons, he signed with FC Goa and recently received his first call-up to the Indian national football team.

Currently, Sangwan is training with the national team in Vietnam, where India is preparing for a friendly match against the host nation on October 12. He has already completed three training sessions, starting in Kolkata and continuing in Nam Định. For Sangwan, every day feels like a dream.

“This is my first call-up to the national team, and it’s always special. Everyone dreams of playing for India at least once in their life, so this means a lot to me,” he said, reflecting on his achievement.

The moment he learned about his call-up took him by surprise. “Someone sent me a congratulatory text, and I couldn’t figure out why. When I checked online and saw the list of probables, I realized why I got the message. It was both surprising and joyful,” he shared.

Sangwan has also praised the coaching staff for their honesty and straightforwardness. “One thing I can say about the coaching staff is that they are direct. They will tell you good or bad things to your face. Coach Manolo Marquez has a good relationship with me, just like he has with all the players in the national team and at FC Goa,” he explained.

His experience in the national camp has been positive so far. “I see why many of these players have been part of the national team for so long. Everyone is confident and sure of their abilities. I want to contribute to the team in any way I can,” he said.

Sangwan’s inclusion in the national squad is not surprising to Indian football fans. His consistent performances as a left-back in the Indian Super League (ISL) have showcased his skills, particularly as he competed against notable players like Subhasish Bose and Akash Mishra.

He has an advantage in adjusting to the national team, as he shares the same head coach and most of the coaching staff with FC Goa. “This connection has made it easier for me to fit in with the national camp,” he noted.

Just over two years ago, Sangwan was playing in the I-League for RoundGlass Punjab FC, hoping for a breakthrough. After providing 10 assists in two seasons with Chennaiyin FC, he has now opened the door to the national team.

“I believe that constant learning and growth every day have helped me reach this point in my career. I will keep trying to give my best and learn from every situation, whether good or bad,” Sangwan concluded.
