FC Goa delivered a commanding performance to defeat Kerala Blasters 2-0 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Goa. The victory solidified their hold on second place in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 standings, taking their total to 42 points. This win also delayed Mohun Bagan Super Giant’s chance of clinching the League Winners’ Shield, as an FC Goa loss would have automatically crowned them champions.
Goa controlled 52.2% of possession and registered six shots on target compared to Kerala’s single attempt. From the beginning, the Gaurs played an aggressive attacking game, pressing high and creating several goal-scoring opportunities.
One of the first big moments came in the 20th minute when Mohammad Yasir sent in a cross from a corner, aiming for Carl McHugh. The midfielder connected with a strong header, but the ball went wide of the post. Goa continued to push forward, and in the 38th minute, Iker Guarrotxena found Dejan Drazic with a brilliant through ball. Drazic managed to break through the Kerala defense but was denied by an excellent save from goalkeeper Kamaljit Singh.
Goa’s persistence paid off just seconds into the second half. The Gaurs started the half aggressively, launching an attack that saw Udanta Singh deliver a perfect pass to Drazic on the right flank. Drazic fired a powerful shot that Kamaljit could only parry away. The loose ball fell straight to Guarrotxena, who calmly slotted it into the bottom right corner, giving Goa a 1-0 lead in the 46th minute.
The goal shifted momentum further in Goa’s favor, and in the 73rd minute, they doubled their lead. McHugh played an incisive pass to Aakash Sangwan, who quickly found Guarrotxena inside the box. The Spaniard showed great footwork to evade Kerala’s defenders before delivering a perfect assist to Yasir, who tapped the ball into the net.
With a two-goal cushion, FC Goa continued to dominate possession and frustrate Kerala’s efforts. They played with patience, maintaining control in midfield and preventing Kerala from building any meaningful attacks. In the 79th minute, Brison Fernandes had an opportunity to add a third goal but missed the target. However, Goa’s defense stayed resolute, ensuring a clean sheet and a well-earned three points.
Guarrotxena was the standout player of the match. The Spanish forward not only scored but also provided an assist. His all-around performance saw him complete 24 of 28 passes and create three goal-scoring chances, making him a key figure in Goa’s victory.
FC Goa will next face Punjab FC on February 27 as they continue their push for a top-two finish. Meanwhile, Kerala Blasters will look to bounce back when they take on Jamshedpur FC on March 1.
