In a high-stakes battle between two formidable teams, Services showcased their unwavering determination and precision by securing a thrilling 1-0 win over Goa in the 37th National Games Football (Men) group stage, at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Fatorda, on Monday.
The first half of the game was dominated by Services, who exhibited exceptional teamwork and precision. Samir Murmu was in fine form, as he created a scoring opportunity early on by setting up Vijay J in the box but his feeble shot, however, couldn’t find a recipient.
Another moment of brilliance came from Thingnam B. Singh whose dangerous volley was well blocked by Goa goalkeeper Ozen Silva in the early moments. At the other end, Goa had a golden chance to surge ahead in the 10th minute but Clencio Pinto's snap shot missed the target narrowly after the rival defence was caught off guard. Services relentless efforts continued as moments later Boinao Singh's long-range shot sailed over the crossbar.
Kazi’s relentless efforts continued as moments later he dribbled past multiple defenders but couldn’t find the crucial pass to Anas. It wasn’t until a well-executed corner that Services finally broke the deadlock. Harmeet’s precision met Ali’s head, and the ball found the back of the net with a slight deflection from a defender. In the 12th minute, Rahul Ramakrishnan and Samir Murmu spurn the easiest chance in the in 14th and 16th minutes respectively.
Services were presented with another golden opportunity, this time from a well-measured cross from Pradeep Kumar expertly delivered by Thingnam Singh but the former Pradeep Kumar. However, his tap failed to beat the rival goalkeeper. Services' Vijay J and Murmu rasping shot sailed over the crossbar.
The second half began with renewed vigour, and Services showed a resurgence in their attacking efforts. Murmu made a brilliant run forward into the box but his attempt was thwarted by a superb save from the Goa goalkeeper Ozen Silva. Goa's Lewan Castana shot a volley from a long distance but the ball sailed over the crossbar.
As the match neared its conclusion, Goa continued to create numerous chances. Lethaloleen Khonsai's scintillating run down the wing culminated in a dangerous cross into the box, but substitute Bikash Singh's shot hit the left post and eluded the Goa goalkeeper.
In the end, this exhilarating encounter witnessed a plethora of opportunities created by Services, but only one goal would separate them. Services emerged victorious, securing all three points in a remarkable showcase of skill and determination.
