MARGAO: Sarzora Sports Club advanced to the quarterfinals of the Marcus (Mark) Mascarenhas Memorial Trophy football tournament by defeating United Club Verna 3-0 at the Chinchinim Church ground on Monday.
Sarzora opened the scoring in the 17th minute when Rowan Fernandes converted a free kick taken by Piedade Fernandes. Just a minute later, Rowan doubled the lead with a goal assisted by Nigel Fernandes. Despite United Club Verna's efforts to reduce the deficit, Sarzora's defense remained strong, and they went into halftime with a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, Om Raikar added a third goal for Sarzora, receiving a pass from Leslie Coasta. United Club Verna continued to push for a goal, but they couldn't break through Sarzora's defense.
The tournament was inaugurated by Agnes Mascarenhas, the wife of the late Marcus, in the presence of Sister Jessy Fernandes, Headmistress of Assumpta Convent High School, and Fr. David Fernandes, Assistant Parish Priest of Our Lady of Assumpta Church.
Agnes also presented the Man of the Match award to Rowan Fernandes of Sarzora SC in front of other dignitaries.
