Panaji: In the season's first Kolkata Derby, Mohun Bagan Super Giant delivered a stunning performance, defeating city rivals Mohammedan Sporting Club 3-0 in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25. The match took place at the Vivekananda Yuba Bharati Krirangan in Kolkata, allowing the reigning champions to secure a comfortable win before the international break.
The game began with high intensity, but Mohun Bagan struck first in the eighth minute. Jamie Maclaren, the Australian forward, headed in a goal from a corner taken by Greg Stewart. This early lead energized the Mariners, who kept pressing Mohammedan Sporting and forcing mistakes in midfield.
In the 31st minute, Subhasish Bose doubled the lead with a powerful header from Stewart’s free-kick. Just five minutes later, Stewart scored himself, driving into the penalty area and firing a shot into the bottom left corner.
The second half continued with Mohun Bagan pushing for more goals, while Mohammedan SC made several substitutions to increase their attacking energy. Although they performed better than in the first half, they still struggled against Mohun Bagan’s intensity.
Greg Stewart was the standout player of the match, contributing one goal and two assists. He created four chances and completed 11 of 14 passes, showcasing his impact in midfield.
Looking ahead, Mohun Bagan Super Giant will face arch-rivals East Bengal in their next match on October 19, while Mohammedan Sporting will play against Kerala Blasters at home on October 20.
