All India Football Federation (AIFF) is increasing its efforts to promote fair play and sportsmanship in Indian football. Following a recent directive from FIFA, the AIFF’s Refereeing Department will enforce a stricter “Code of Conduct – Participant Behaviour” in all major tournaments this season.

Starting with the Durand Cup, I-League, I-League 2, Super Cup, and Indian Super League (ISL), this new code aims to ensure a professional, respectful, and fair environment for players, coaches, officials, and fans. It outlines expected behavior both on and off the field, requiring players to maintain discipline, respect referees’ decisions, and avoid dissent.

The stricter enforcement targets unruly behavior, aiming to create a more disciplined atmosphere throughout the season. Persistent and disrespectful challenging of referee decisions will now be classified as dissent, resulting in warnings or suspensions. Only one coaching staff member will be allowed to stand in the technical area to coach, with medics and other staff permitted only for primary duties.

The AIFF’s decision comes amid rising concerns about player misconduct, on-field brawls, and unruly fan behavior. These incidents tarnish the sport’s image and create a hostile environment for everyone involved. The new rules are designed to promote sportsmanship and respect, curbing dissent and improving communication and gameplay. Fair play and player safety are also enhanced with consistent enforcement.

Key regulations for the upcoming season

Captain’s role: The team captain acts as the bridge between the team and the referee. Only the captain can respectfully approach the referee to seek clarification on calls. Any other player doing so risks a caution for dissent. This rule helps prevent a swarm of players from surrounding the referee, which can be intimidating and disrupt the game’s flow.

Technical area: Only authorized senior members of the technical staff in the designated technical area can respectfully request explanations from the fourth official regarding officiating decisions. Any player who seeks an explanation from the referee or fourth official will be subject to penalties for dissent.

Technical area conduct: To maintain order on the sidelines and prevent distractions during gameplay, only one member of the technical staff can stand and actively coach players. Other technical staff members, such as doctors or physiotherapists, may only stand when attending to essential duties related to player health, safety, and well-being.

Dissent: To ensure a fair and respectful playing environment, persistent challenges to a match official’s decisions, whether through verbal or physical means, will result in a caution or dismissal from the field.

These new regulations are intended to create a more respectful and disciplined environment for players and referees alike, promoting better sportsmanship and enhancing the overall quality of Indian football.
