Goa Football Development Council (GFDC) held an event to distribute football kits to budding footballers from the Aldona centre, recently.

“Football has put Goa on the international map and continues to inspire the younger generation to strive for excellence,” said Aldona MLA Adv. Carlos Alvares Ferreira at the programme held at GFDC’s Aldona centre. Ferreira emphasized that sports not only develop physical and mental strength but also foster discipline, teamwork, and determination in children, which are essential for their all-round development.

Currently, the Aldona centre trains 45 boys and 35 girls, with guidance from coaches Sundar Raut and Worrel D’Souza under the leadership of Centre Head Blaise D’Cruz.

Speaking at the occasion, Ferreira shared memories of playing football on paddy fields and rough grounds during his youth. “We often played barefoot, and it was a challenge for many to adjust to wearing shoes when they reached championships. Today, with initiatives like these, our children are better equipped to pursue their passion and bring glory to the state,” he said.

Also present were Dr. Geeta Nagvenkar, Member Secretary of GFDC and Executive Director of the Sports Authority of Goa (SAG), Sr. Rosarina Crasto, Headmistress of St. Thomas Girls High School, Aldona, and other dignitaries including Subhash Raut and Nataline Colaco.Dr. Nagvenkar highlighted the significance of integrating sports into academics. “Football teaches discipline, time management, and goal-setting, shaping children to be fearless and character-driven individuals. The kit distribution is a small yet impactful step towards nurturing champions and preparing them to become stalwarts in Goan football,” she said.

She also commended the government’s unwavering support in promoting football. “With the dedicated efforts of our Chief Minister and Sports Minister, and the tireless work of GFDC’s staff across 35 centres in Goa, we are building a solid foundation for both boys and girls to excel in the sport,” she added.
