MARGAO
Two-time I-League champions Churchill Brothers FC have chosen Raia Sports Club as their home venue for this season’s I-League matches.
Their first game will be against Dempo SC on December 18. Initially, the club had planned to host their matches at the SAG ground in Benaulim, but logistical issues with temporary dressing rooms led them to opt for Raia after receiving assistance from the local panchayat.
Churchill Brothers CEO Valanka Alemao explained that although they attempted to bring in larger containers for dressing rooms, time constraints made it impossible. As a result, they decided to play at Raia, where preparations are already underway to meet competitive standards.
The Raia ground, which has a rich history hosting events like the Durand Cup and serving as a training base during the Lusofonia Games, will now serve as the home ground for Churchill Brothers. The venue is also used for various local leagues and is home to Raia Sporting Club, organisers of the long-standing Custodio Memorial football tournament.
Meanwhile, Dempo SC's home venue remains uncertain, as improvements are needed at their Academy ground in Ella, Old Goa. They are not scheduled to host any I-League matches until early next year.
