Title-chasing Churchill Brothers FC will host Shillong Lajong FC at Raia Panchayat Ground on Friday at 4:30 pm, seeking a crucial victory to solidify their position at the top of the I-League table.
"This is a vital match for us, and our goal is to return to the summit," stated Churchill Brothers Head Coach Dimitris Dimitrtou, whose team recently bounced back with a 3-1 win over Rajasthan United FC. "We are fully focused on Lajong, and I'm confident the team will be prepared."
The victory against Rajasthan United provided a significant morale boost, particularly after a string of away losses. "We face a strong opponent, but the recent win has prepared us well," Dimitrtou added, emphasizing the advantage of playing in front of their home fans.
Churchill Brothers currently sit second in the league with 31 points from 17 matches, just behind the current leader. Shillong Lajong, in fourth place with 26 points from the same number of games, pose a significant threat. Key players like Trijoy Dias, Stendly Fernandes, and top scorer Wayde Lekay will be pivotal for Churchill Brothers' success.
Shillong Lajong, under Head Coach Jose Carlos Rodriguez Hevia, are equally determined to secure a positive result. "Facing Churchill Brothers will be challenging, but we aim for a strong performance and a positive outcome," said Hevia. "We will give our utmost effort."
Hevia, who rejoined the club earlier this year and impressed during the Durand Cup, expressed confidence in his team's ambition. "We approach every match with the intention to win," he stated. "It will be difficult, but my players are hungry and ambitious. They are ready to deliver a good show, and I have faith in their abilities."
Hevia also highlighted the "surprisingly talented" local players within his squad, reinforcing his belief in the team's potential. "We will strive for the best every day," he concluded, setting the stage for a highly anticipated clash between two strong contenders.
