As FC Goa prepares to host Mumbai City FC this Saturday at 5 PM in Fatorda, there’s buzz around the decision to slash ticket prices to just 50 rupees. This strategic move aims to attract more fans to the stadium, reigniting the enthusiasm for live football, reminiscent of earlier days when stadiums were packed with supporters.

Padmashri Brahmanand Sankhwalkar, a legendary player, reflected on the contrast between his playing days and the current scenario. “Back then, the crowds were huge, and the excitement was palpable. Now, I’m unsure about the system of play and how it resonates with fans today,” he noted. Despite the changes in football styles and player dynamics, he believes that engaging players who can capture the audience's attention is essential.

Sankhwalkar mentioned the legacy of players like Dominic, highlighting how fans would flock to see them play. “Even today, fans remember quality players. If someone special is on the field, people will come, even if it’s just to see them for a few minutes,” he said. He emphasized the importance of building a loyal fanbase, urging players to commit to their clubs to foster a deeper connection with supporters.

Sankhwalkar welcomed the ticket price reduction, stating, “Lower prices can help bring back the crowd. Many people want to support football, but they need affordable options.” He emphasized that the costs associated with attending matches should be manageable for ordinary fans. “If someone genuinely wants to attend, they should be able to do so without breaking the bank,” he added.

Derrick Pereira, former coach of FC Goa, echoed this sentiment. “In our day, football was the primary entertainment. Now, kids are glued to their screens and social media. It’s essential to create an atmosphere that draws them back to live matches,” he said. Pereira pointed out that European clubs maintain strong fan engagement due to their rich traditions and loyalty, which is something Indian football must strive for.

The drop in ticket prices and the timing of the match on a weekend could be key factors in attracting more fans. Pereira believes that the excitement from previous matches, especially when the team rallied to equalize, shows that there’s still a hunger for live football. “People want to experience that thrill in person, just like they did during the seasons with players like Coro and Lanzarote,” he said.

Savio Madeira, Technical Director of Sporting Clube de Goa, emphasized the need for fans to seize this opportunity. “Lowering ticket prices is one of the best moves FC Goa has made. It’s vital for the community to come out and support the Gaurs of FCGoa. We must make the most of this opportunity,” he stated.

Ravi Puskur, CEO of FC Goa, also addressed the concerns of season ticket holders amidst the price change. “When the team has needed support, it’s the season ticket holders who have always put their hand up. We will ensure they don’t feel short-changed,” he said. Puskur promised that if the government reduces stadium charges, allowing for continued low pricing, season ticket holders will be compensated, either financially or through exclusive team offers.

As FC Goa gears up for a crucial match against Mumbai City FC, the lowered ticket prices are seen as a vital step towards revitalizing the fanbase and enhancing matchday experiences. With everyone from players to management expressing the importance of fans and Goan support, the anticipation builds. The upcoming game isn’t just another fixture; it’s a chance for fans to reconnect with their team and experience the thrill of live football once again. Whether it’s through affordable tickets or the return of familiar faces on the pitch, the hope is that this season marks a turning point for attendance in Indian football, especially for FC Goa.
