Condolences pour in from football fraternity

Football officials and former players have paid heartfelt tributes to Mariano Dias, recognising his immense contribution to the sport.

Anthony Pango, Senior Vice President of the Goa Football Association (GFA), expressed his condolences, remembering Dias for his dedication to Goan football.

"Mariano Dias was a great servant of the game. He had a sharp eye for talent and would go out of his way to help young players get opportunities to excel. I had the privilege of seeing him play and being coached by him during my youth. He was instrumental in giving many of us the chance to showcase our skills," said Pango.

Patwin Fijardo, GFA Executive Member and President of Guirdolim Sports Club, also paid tribute, recalling his own experiences under Dias's coaching. "Mariano Dias was a very good friend of mine. He was instrumental in my football career, especially during my time at Guirdolim Club. He always supported us during the Guirdolim Panchayat Cup and made sure to recognise talent by selecting the 'Man of the Match' for every game. His passing is a huge loss for Goan football."

Elvis Gomes, former President of the Goa Football Association, praised Dias for his tireless efforts to promote the sport.

"Besides his passion for football, Mariano was a true gentleman who gave back to the game selflessly through his work with the Chandor Club. He was also part of a socio-political family, and service to others was in his nature. May his soul rest in peace."

Lector Mascarenhas, former India midfielder, fondly remembered Mariano Dias as a beloved player and mentor. "He was a very popular player from Chandor in my playing days. After retiring, he continued to contribute immensely to the game by promoting players from not just Chandor but across Salcete and South Goa. Mariano was a true lover of the game, and his passing leaves a void in our football community."
