Principal of St Anthony High School Monte De Guirim Fr. Milchester Furtado believes that sports should not be seen as a tool to get just the marks for participation but it must go beyond the narrow limits and take a broader view with the budding athletes eyeing laurels for the state and country.
Tracing his roots in Chinchinim, Fr Furtado said, “Marks is just an incentive given, we need to create a proper mindset about sports, not only in the minds of the students pursuing sports but also in the minds of parents and educators who are very much instrumental in developing this sportsmanship in the minds and hearts of the young people,”.
“Sports should not stop at school level, which is at present the reality. School sports must open venues for our youngsters to go higher to play at state, national and international levels.,” said Furtado, who is also a passionate sports lover and plays the sports whenever he has free time.
For Furtado, discipline, focus, dedication and hard Work, are the cornerstone of success and as an educationist he likes to give his students the best, so that they can achieve their dreams.
“I teach my students to dream big and also to develop the courage to achieve their dreams. I always believe; ‘Put discipline in life and no dream is too big to achieve.’ Being a Goan, love for sports is natural; it cannot be separated from life,” said Fr Furtado.
“At Monte we believe in all round development of the students,” he said.
“We provide our students lots of opportunities in various fields; be it Education, Sports or other co-curricular activities like; singing, dancing, acting, music etc. Our School motto is “AD ARDUA” meaning ‘towards greater achievements’. Forming our students in discipline we try our best to give our students a vision in life, building in them a confidence that they can stand up for themselves and build their career in whichever field they like.
