MARGAO: Navelim Villagers Union advanced to the semifinals of the United Trophy after a thrilling 6-5 penalty shootout win against United Club Verna at Rosary church ground, Navelim, on Monday.
Nash Pereira's stunning header put Navelim ahead in the 28th minute. However, Desmond Pereira levelled the score for UC Verna in the 59th minute leading to a tense 1-1 draw at full time.
The drama continued into the tie-breaker. Clive Fernandes, Fulzacio Cardozo, Desmon Gama, and Josley Moniz all converted their spot-kicks for Verna. However, Navelim held their nerve, with Ronaldo Pereira, Meliston Dias, Aden Pereira, Vento Costa, and Velington Almeida all finding the back of the net. Navelim's goalkeeper Antonio Da Silva earned the Man of the Match award which was presented by Lorry Dias.
