Purti Amey Lotlikar from the Bandora Judo Centre has clinched a bronze medal at the Khelo India National Judo League at Thrissur, Kerala. She qualified for the league by winning the West Zone Judo League in August 2024.

A student at SS Samiti High School in Dhavali, Ponda, Purti is quickly becoming a standout star in the sport. Reflecting on her journey, she shared, “I started learning judo at an early age. My coach’s unique teaching style, which combines strength training and self-defence techniques, makes learning enjoyable.”

Balancing her judo training with her academic commitments and additional involvement in taekwondo has been challenging. “It’s difficult to manage everything, but I’ve enjoyed the challenge so far,” she said.

Purti has big dreams for her judo career. With the support of her coach and family, she aims to see how far she can go in the sport, including aspirations to represent India at the Asian Games and the Olympics. “For now, I’m happy to have inspired my parents to take up judo as well,” she added. “Winning medals is important to me, and I’m excited about my journey.”

Her love for judo began when she noticed kids training nearby and decided to join them. “I instantly liked the sport and decided to pursue it... and that’s how my journey started,” she explained.

Purti’s coach, Aditya Kankonkar, has been a significant source of inspiration for her. With a wealth of coaching experience, Kankonkar emphasises the benefits of judo for young athletes, particularly girls.

“At first, Purti was just interested, but after winning, she decided to achieve more. This martial art improves body fitness, confidence, and leadership skills,” he said.
