Quepem based swimmers are upset about the poor quality of water in the Goa government’s Quepem swimming pool.

According to them, the water quality has steadily deteriorated over the last three months, making regular swimming difficult. They are also upset that the authorities have not been able to improve the water quality despite several reminders.

Kiran Dalal, mother of Soha, who represents Goa state in national level swimming competitions said, “The water has become green and we cannot see the bottom of the pool. We have complained to the authorities, but no improvement has taken place. Our daughter has to travel to Margao to practice.”

Suraj Velip, who represented Goa at the recently held National Games in Uttarakhand said, “The poor quality of water in the pool prevented us from practicing efficiently before the National Games in January-February this year. This is unfortunate.”

Hansel Moniz, another regular swimmer said, “The water has become so green, that if a swimmer sinks at the deep end, the life guards will not be able to spot him/her. The pool has been kept closed regularly for maintenance, but they have not solved the problem.”

When contacted, Ajit Dessai, the pool manager said “I feel bad about what is happening. Our engineers have taken away the old water pump. I am hoping they will give us a new pump to keep the water clean.”
