The news of James Mazarello wearing the Uttar Pradesh Rudras jersey in the ongoing Hockey India League in Odisha has generated a wave of excitement in Goa's hockey community.

The 23-year-old goalkeeper, representing Great Britain and England, has quickly become a standout performer in the league, captivating fans in Rourkela. James, who traces his roots from Velim, is not just a rising star in international hockey but also a source of immense pride for the Goan community.

James’ father, Felix, a gastroenterologist with the National Health Service in England, migrated from Miraj, Maharashtra, in the 1970s, but his roots are deeply anchored in Velim Village, South Goa. The Mazarello family has had a significant influence in Goa, both in the medical and political fields. Felix's brother, Dr. Sebastiao Mazarello, was the first MLA of Cuncolim Constituency and a prominent leader of the United Goans Democratic Party. He played a key role in the Opinion Poll, which decided Goa's fate in 1967. Felix’s son, Dr. Wilson "Babush" Mazarello, followed in the medical profession but also made his mark as a footballer for Academia, Panvel, and Salgaocar Sports Club.

The news of James’ success has caused a celebratory atmosphere in Velim Village. "I’m at a loss for words to express how happy I am. This is all the result of his hard work and dedication," said a villager from Velim.

James’ exceptional goalkeeping skills have garnered him high praise from experts. Clarence Lobo, Dronacharya Awardee and former India coach, described him as one of the best goalkeepers in the Hockey India League, commending his confidence, agility, and composure in goal, which make it incredibly difficult for opponents to beat him.

Abhay Bhamkikar, President of the Goan Hockey Association, also praised James for bringing flair to the Indian Hockey League with his performances for the Rudras. He acknowledged the important role hockey plays in the hearts of Goans, saying, "For every hockey lover and sports enthusiast, James’ success is a proud moment for Goa." He also expressed his admiration for the entire goalkeeper unit of the franchise, noting that James had truly stolen the spotlight.

James, who is a graduate of the England Development Pathway, has represented England at the U16s, U18s, and U21s levels, as well as Great Britain U21s. He made his England debut in the FIH Hockey Pro League in February 2022 against Spain. Later that year, he also played for Great Britain, earning Player of the Match honors for his brilliant shootout saves during his debut in Argentina.
