Health Minister Vishwajit Rane on Sunday said physical attacks on doctors are unacceptable in any society even as he asserted that government as well as private doctors in Goa should be provided a security shield.

Rane, who was addressing the media at Valpoi during a janta darbar in his constituency said the State government will pay serious attention to these issues especially after safety of doctors at their workplace has come to the fore following the rape and assault of a post-graduate student doctor in Kolkata.

The minister however mentioned that there was no need for any changes in the law as existing provisions suffice for the purpose.

The incident in West Bengal is condemnable and shameful, he said, adding that despite Mamata Banerjee who is the chief minister of West Bengal, being a woman the atrocities against women in Kolkata were are regrettable.

CCTV to be installed

Rane said, CCTV cameras are installed and all government medical institutions have been covered.

“CCTV cameras are installed in many places but more will be fitted wherever there is a shortfall and areas left uncovered. The situation in Calcutta has created an alert everywhere,” Rane said.

“This kind of atrocity will never be tolerated. Mamata Banerjee should resign and take responsibility for what happened,” he added.

Meanwhile, Rane said security of private sector doctors will also be taken care of and a decision to install CCTV cameras in private hospitals also will be taken soon.

It is also the government’s responsibility to ensure their (private doctors) security, he said.

‘Doctor is like god’

Rane said, the contribution of doctors to society is of paramount importance and expressed regret that violent behaviour towards them in some societies occur.

“If such things can happen to doctors who are like god, then there is doubt whether the government of Mamata Banerjee will really provide security to doctors in West Bengal,” he said.

The health minister said that the government doctors’ strike in Goa in the context of what happened in Kolkata was understandable.

“Everyone has the democratic right to protest against injustice and oppression. The government will stand firmly behind the doctors,” Rane said.
