Honest Tiatr Review
Concept
Vengence… revenge… are key words that strike the mind of the one hurt with the action of another and when sex and love is used in disguise for revenge, the act may taste sweet but the fallout is definitely doom and destruction. Sometimes the hurt done may be unintentional or silly but then hurt stored within turns out into a force that brings the game of chess closer to the heart manipulating and guiding each step.
Script
The tiatr script by Rons Tavares is simple, proceeding at a decent pace. The sequences of the plot unfold dramatically without expectations. However the script lacks depth and hence appears superficial and illogical. The writer has tried to give the stage performance a filmy masala twist which is well accepted by the audience too.
Acting
The tiatr has a good combination of experienced and relatively new artistes. Joeson shines as conspirator. His innocent face look does not give in the character he plays. Savanah Mascarenhas excels in her role. The two together carry the play on their shoulders. The court scene, the seduction scenes are enacted well by the artistes. All artistes contribute their share in forming a formidable team on stage.
Music
The tiatr band music is impressive and pleasing to the ears. The opening song by Joeson Afonso on the relevance of a cross gives the tiatr a good start. There are good solos by Lawry Travasso, Xavier Gomes, Marcos Vaz, Savannah Leslie and Superstar Rons. But the pick of them all is surely the solo by Elias on the Year of Hope, a duet on the show off by people working in church associations by Xavier de Maina and Precila and finally the trio by the duet singers along with their son.
Comedy
The comedy of the tiatr is clean and decent. Comedian Lino shoulders the comedy lead with ease. His naturality and flexibility is a treat to watch. The comedy has very less interaction with the main plot. The comedians prove that a tiatr can be well presented without resorting to vulgarity and body shaming.
Backstage
The Writer’s vision was brought up on stage with a decent ease. The light effects were impressive. The background musical score was decent and satiating. The stage sets were good.
Direction
All artistes did a natural job and the Director needs to be commended for presenting a good performance with relatively new names of artistes in the list of tiatrists. There was good coordination of the backstage team with the artistes.
Reviewers take
The tiatr was presented as a “Lenten Tiatr”. But then, how can a tiatr that has a sex seduction and revenge theme qualify in it when the seductress doesn’t even repent for her actions? There were no Biblical scenes introduced as a message for lent. The play has no vulgarity or indecent behavior in it; but is this enough to call this a Lenten tiatr?
Why do people shy away from attending tiatrs staged by new writer/directors, with a young talented acting cast? How will new artistes be cultivated in the art if people do not support them?
