A freedom fighter whose legacy is showcased at the Sinquerim-based ‘Aguad Interactive Museum: Goa - The Land, The Struggle, The People’, Joaquim Luis Gonsalo Araujo (born October 27, 1922)took part in the Quit India Movement and was an active member of the Goa Youth League. In 1947, he was elected as Secretary of the National Congress Goa (Bombay branch). In 1947-48, he edited ‘Porgecho Ulhas’, a Goan national weekly. He participated in several demonstrations against the pro- Portuguese institutions. In 1949, he came to Goa as an underground worker and was arrested and detained in jail for three years. In 1961, Joaquim, as a Goan delegate, attended the Afro-Asian Conference for the Liberation of Goa held in Delhi and after Liberation worked as the President of the Freedom Fighters’ Association in Goa. He was also elected as a Member of the Goa Legislative Assembly in the first Assembly elections held in 1963.
