Lent: A time to reset the soul

Life is a journey and we sometimes take wrong turns. We become so caught up in everything that we lose sight of our spiritual connection. We get lost in the traffic of daily problems, distracted by the world's noise and lose sight of the way to true serenity. But the Almighty, in His infinite mercy, gives us a map to find our way back—and that map is Lent. Lent is not just a season. It is an invitation, a call from above, saying: "Come back to me. Walk with me. Let me fill your heart with love and light."

Lent is more than just a ritual. It is a time to pause, reflect and return—to cleanse our hearts, renew our faith and grow in love. It is a personal journey back to the Almighty. For forty days, we take small yet powerful steps toward spiritual renewal. It is like a farmer preparing the land before sowing seeds. Without clearing the weeds, no good crop can grow. Similarly, unless we remove the weeds of sins, we cannot truly flourish in our spiritual life. It is not about looking sad or gloomy but about finding true joy by coming closer to the Almighty.

Many people think Lent is only about fasting. St. John Chrysostom, one of the greatest early Church Fathers, spoke beautifully about fasting. He emphasised that true fasting is not just about abstaining from food but also about purifying the heart, controlling the tongue, and growing in love for God and others.

This journey is guided by three powerful virtues: Fasting, Prayer and Charity. Let us reflect on each of these virtues and understand how they transform us.

Fasting – strengthening the soul

Fasting is more than just skipping meals; it is also about avoiding harmful behaviours. It should make us craveforrighteousness, patience, kindness and humility. It teaches us to say “No” to our selfish desires so that we can say“Yes” to God’s will.

Prayer – connecting with the divine

Prayer is the breath of the soul. Just as our body needs oxygen, our spirit needs prayer to stay alive. It is about opening our hearts. It is through prayer that we speak to the Almighty, seek His guidance and feel His presence in our lives.

Charity – love in action

The Almighty blesses us not just to keep His love but to share it. Lent is a time to become His hands and feet in the world—helping the poor, comforting the lonely and forgiving those who hurt us. Giving is not just about money; it is about time, kindness and presence.

So let us walk through these forty days of spiritual adventure with joy, knowing that at the end of the road, the Almighty stands with open arms ready to welcome us home. Let’s begin, step by step, heart by heart. Lent is here. Grace is waiting. Let’s return to love.
