Naguesh Karmali: Unsung hero of Goa's liberation

Goa Glorious

Naguesh Karmali was a member of the National Congress (Goa) and worked as an organiser and political propagandist under the party, especially in South Goa. He organised several underground activities to evoke anti-Portuguese sentiments among Goans from 1953. He was arrested in Rivona on September 15, 1954, while attempting large-scale preparations to celebrate ‘Terekhol Day’ on September 16, 1954. After eight months in police custody, Naguesh Karmali was tried and sentenced to eight years of rigorous imprisonment and two years as internal security measures. He was kept in Reis Magos jail and later shifted to Aguada jail until his release in May 1959 under General Amnesty. Naguesh Karmali’s story is available at the Sinquerim-based Aguad Interactive Museum: Goa- The Land, The Struggle, The People.
