Honest Tiatr Review
Concept
Lawlessness is an issue plaguing our society and state at large. But who is responsible for this breakage of law and order in the State? Crimes are the order of the day; Innocents are being killed for petty reasons. Can crime be curtailed if not stopped? Can the law abiding citizens breathe in peace? Can Goa be salvaged from the monstrous attack on its property and crime? The tiatr being written by an Assistant Sub Inspector of police Francis de Dicarpale is an insiders story of the misfortune that has befallen Goa.
Script
The tiatr script is simple and heart touching. The sequences of the plot unfold with great suspense. However due to the nature of the past roles done by a character casted in the tiatr the audience is seen murmuring ‘hoch korta astolo’! The graph of the characters appear illogical with no justification. The double role of the offender is suspicious. Are Goan girls so naïve that they don’t know that the husband and his brother are the same? There is a good dose of comedy that is partly interwoven with the plot.
Acting
The tiatr falls flat due to probably lack of ideal cast. Antonette and Jenny excel in their roles. Cajie de Cacora gives a great performance as the artiste in disguise. Ronny plays spoilsport in the role of an Inspector. In a tiatr that centres around a police station loaded with crime, a police Inspector jumping and howling dialogues makes the tiatr a ‘Carnaval khell’ that was totally unwarranted and unwanted. Vishal Gawas is comfortable in his dual appearance but his mannerisms are getting too repetitive. Francis de Dicarpale is good in his cameo.
Music
The tiatr band music is impressive, pleasing and soothing to the ears however the keyboardist could not match the class of the lead instruments. There are good solos by Jenifer, Agosto de Calangute, Xavier Gomes and Benny de Aldona. Jenifer’s solo with her well modulated voice was the pick of the day. The trio by Benny Xavier and Tony de Ribandar was vulgar and in bad taste which was surely not acceptable from senior tiatrists that they are. The other trio by Jenifer Cajetan and Agosto was well received by the audience. The icing on the cake is the duet by Tony de Ribandar and Jenifer
Comedy
The comedy quotient is good but the unnecessary vulgarity brought in just to make a handful people laugh was in bad taste. Comedian Sally could do better without vulgarity. Comedian Caitan excelled in a cleaner version of comedy. Comedian Kalliz was charming and cute with her acts.
Backstage
The Writer’s vision was brought up on stage with great technical background. The light effects were impressive. The background musical score was decent but was too loud at times. The arrival of the train and the usage of the railway platform and entering/alighting from the train was well presented.
Direction
With the exception of one overacting Inspector, the other artistes did a good natural job. There was good coordination of the backstage team with the artistes. The moves of the artistes. However the females in the plot could have a better footfall on stage.
Reviewers take
Tiatr is a tiatr because of the variety songs which was a hallmark of the tiatrs staged in yesteryears. Variety songs in the form of a duet and trios are a welcome step on the tiatr stage which of late are missing. New Directors bring in a hope for the betterment of tiatrs. Our audience should support the work of the relatively new directors so that new blood of ideas come on stage.
A good tiatr recommended to watch, but be prepared to excuse the moments of vulgar comedy.
