CANACONA

Intermittent heavy rainfall and strong winds on Sunday led to multiple instances of tree falls across Canacona, causing temporary disruption in traffic and damage to roadside infrastructure.

The most significant incident occurred near Partagal Math, where a eucalyptus tree was uprooted and fell across the NH-66 (old highway), bringing down overhead electricity lines and blocking vehicular movement for around half an hour. The fallen tree landed a few metres from the entrance of the well-known temple, leading to a complete halt of traffic, including buses and vehicles carrying pilgrims visiting the site where a large statue of Lord Ram was recently inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The incident also damaged roadside electrical cables, creating a hazardous situation for commuters. Another large eucalyptus tree in the vicinity was left dangerously hanging on an adjacent tree, further raising safety concerns. Fortunately, no injuries or vehicular damage were reported, although some motorists attempted to carefully navigate past the obstruction before traffic was fully stopped.

After the rains eased, local residents and motorists, after waiting for Fire & Emergency Services personnel, took the initiative to remove the fallen tree and clear the road, restoring traffic flow. Electricity department officials and fire service personnel later inspected the site and secured the damaged lines to ensure safety.

Authorities have urged motorists to exercise caution during the ongoing monsoon season, as strong winds and heavy rains increase the risk of falling trees, damaged power lines, and slippery road conditions.

Several other tree-fall incidents were also reported across Canacona during the day, though no injuries were recorded.
